Meant to post this a while ago. Made and uploaded my own logo into #GTAV #gtaonline for #teamshortbus. Had to call it “The Real Team Short Bus” because team short bus was taken. Reminds me of that old Ghostbusters cartoon
The Doctor’s Speech in series 7’s The Rings of Akhaten. The video itself features scenes spliced in from new Who all over.
The general reception I’ve seen for The Rings of Akhaten has been lukewarm at best. I personally believe it’s one of the stronger episodes in the second half of series seven.
At the very least, this moment is one of the very best seen since Doctor Who came back to television. I think perhaps the episode should have been re-ordered. Not much would’ve been lost storywise if say, this had been the penultimate episode of the series and would’ve given more impact to what’s perceived as a generally underwhelming season.
The parts for greatness are all here: The Doctor and a colossal gesture against a huge, powerful enemy, his absolute bravery and gift of gab even in the face of adversity. It even features a strong character moment for Clara following this speech. Her moment would also have had more impact if they played up the role of “the most important leaf in human history” for a few episodes and have that moment be the big payoff it deserved.
The Juxtaposition of the song (which speaks to the Doctor more so than the creature) and Matt Smith’s powerful delivery of this speech creates one of those beautiful Who moments we’ve all come to love, expect and sometimes shed a tear for.
I’ve been going through a Who’s Who (yes, I went there) of Doctor Who episodes this week trying to get pumped for Day of the Doctor on Saturday and this episode was on the list along with a slew of others and I feel like this episode deserves more credit than it gets. Didn’t mean to write a god damn essay about it, but here we are. Sorry, not sorry.
